Pallister’s PCs Cut Rent Assist Benefits for Point Douglas Families

The Manitoba NDP condemns Pallister's PC government's cuts to Rent Assist Benefits for Manitobans that need it most.

"The Pallister government is trying to hide another cut to services for vulnerable Manitobans by waiting until after the legislative session ended," said Bernadette Smith, NDP candidate for Point Douglas. "This program is supposed to help low-income and working Manitobans pay their rent and lift themselves out of poverty — all candidates in this race should condemn this cut."

The Rent Assist Benefit was designed to help families have enough money to meet their housing needs. Pallister's cuts to non-EIA Rent Assist recipients mean that families will now have more of their benefit clawed back, which will directly hurt low-income and working Manitobans.

"Just like the cut to the North Point Douglas Women's Centre, this cut will hurt families, single parent households and vulnerable people living in Point Douglas," said Smith. "The people of Point Douglas work hard to make ends meet, and they deserve more support, not less from our government."
